The Motivator Assessment Profile (MAP) enables Athletic Programs to increase engagement, improve scholarship decisions, and reduce transfer risks

“With a brand-new roster, it's important for us to be able to analyze our players coming in so we can provide a great student-athlete experience.

I value the relationships that we have with all our players, but also wanted to understand more about what motivates them when it comes to being a part of our program. This personalized approach will build a cohesive and united team spirit.

The MAP is extremely valuable for our group!”

Angel Whetstone, Head Coach, Women’s Basketball, Madison College

How it Works

  • On a table there is a blank journal, a pencil on top of the journal, and mapping gear, including a camera and magnifying glass

    1. Student-Athlete MAP Creation

Send your current or prospective Student-Athletes a link to the MAP. There are 66 questions, and the assessment takes 10-15 minutes to complete.

  • 2. Self Reflection and Prioritization

There are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ MAP answers. Student-athletes are encouraged to reflect on and discuss their top motivators with coaches and recruiters.

  • Two people sitting at a desk discussing their motivators

    3. Improve the Student Experience

Personalize each student-athlete’s experience based on their MAP results. Analyze motivator trends to improve your recruiting, retention, and marketing strategy.

Backed by research on student-athlete motivation, the Motivator Assessment Profile (MAP) analyzes 12 factors that influence student-athlete decisions to join, stay with, or leave a program:

MAP Insights: This spider chart compares the MAP results of a student-athlete recruit and the average MAP scores from current players on the team. In this example, Coaches and Recruiters should focus their recruitment pitch on team dynamics, health and wellness programs, and how the student-athlete can contribute to their culture and community.

How the MAP Supports Your Student-Athlete Recruitment and Retention Strategy

Personalize the Recruitment Experience

When you know what’s most important to your recruits, you can tailor your pitch based on their highest-scoring motivators. The net result? No more generic recruitment pitches; every student-athlete easily connects the dots between their top motivators and your program.

Reduce Student-Athlete Transfers

When you encourage student-athletes to discuss their top motivators with their Coaches, you provide a safe space to address motivator-specific concerns. Meaningful student-athlete meetings lead to higher engagement, stronger relationships, and lower transfer portal risks.

Improve Scholarship Offer Decisions

Whether you’re recruiting from high school or the transfer portal, the MAP delivers key student-athlete insights to support your scholarship decisions. Our MAP Guidebook includes self-reflection and discussion questions that Athletic Directors, Coaches, Recruiters, Parents, and Student-Athletes care about.

Implement Data-Driven Budgeting and Planning

It can be challenging for Athletic Directors and Coaches to prioritize investments without credible data on student-athlete motivators. When you leverage the MAP department-wide, you acquire instant and filterable insights to support your budgeting and financial planning, including detailed insights for all 66 motivator-specific questions.

Create Compelling Marketing Campaigns

No school or athletic program can be everything to everyone. When you’re clear about your differentiators, you can target the student-athletes who will thrive in your program. Leverage our MAP Insights Platform to create personalized content marketing campaigns.
